Readings/Videos/Speakers:
There will be various readings and videos assigned throughout the course.  This class also includes speakers on various topics, reflecting current information/research, lifestyles and viewpoints that are pertinent to the course content.  By presenting a forum for these speakers, the instructor is supporting academic freedom and inquiry, not advocating a particular lifestyle.  Respect and courtesy is expected by all of us during these presentations.  Exams will cover material from the texts, readings, videos and information presented by the speakers as well as material in the lectures.  Speaker schedule is subject to change.

Course Description:
This course focuses on the multi-faceted phenomenon of human sexuality in a
sex-positive manner.  We will examine human sexuality from a psychosocial perspective across the life span on an interpersonal, behavioral and ethical level.  Information will address the individual, family system, and cultural influences, as well as the reciprocal nature of their interaction.

Time will be spent on conceptualizing sexual issues as we explore feminine, masculine and androgynous roles as they relate to personal functioning, human development and interpersonal relations living in a complex and changing society.  In addition, there will be many opportunities for students to confront and share their attitudes, thoughts and values as related to human sexuality.  There will be an emphasis upon reflecting on these issues, as well as upon sharing information.  The content of this course is, of course, provocative.  We will need to conduct ourselves with poise and respectful confidence as we research and investigate the nuances of sexuality.

Ground Rules:

Students are free to express their personal opinions (especially in small group discussion) and reactions. However, hateful speech or expression of disgust will not be tolerated. Among other things, this means: do not say “ew” when we are discussing something not to your liking.  Lastly, students are expected to take ownership for their feelings; therefore, "I-statements" will be encouraged.

Please note:  there will be sexually explicit material/film shown in this class.

 Goals and Objectives:
1.     Develop an awareness of the wide range of human sexual behaviors

2.     Develop an understanding of accurate information and values regarding your personal sexual value system and integrating

5.     Develop an understanding of different lifestyles and sexual orientations

6.     Develop critical thinking skills while reviewing the cultural influences of sexual behavior

7.     Personal and professional growth, applying issues from class to professional and career related demands
